Formula

The formula for calculating the Population Equivalent (PE) is as follows:

PE = (Daily Waste Water Amount * BOD5 Concentration in Waste Water / 60) + (Daily Waste Water Amount * COD Concentration in Waste Water / 120)

This formula takes into account the daily waste water amount, the BOD5 concentration, and the COD concentration in the waste water.

Things to Note

The Population Equivalent (PE) is not a measure of the actual number of individuals served by a waste water treatment plant. Instead, it is a measure of the organic biodegradable load entering the plant. Therefore, the calculated PE might be higher than the actual number of individuals served by the plant if there are significant industrial or commercial waste water contributions.
